Sathees C Raghavan, Professor at the Department of Biochemistry, took over as the Chair of CAF in October 2020. 

Under the leadership of Professor Sathees, the facility is dedicated to advancing research through the highest standards of animal care and ethical practices.

The Central Animal Facility plays a crucial role in supporting a wide range of research projects across IISc, particularly in life sciences, biotechnology, and medicine. It provides state-of-the-art infrastructure, expert guidance, and a commitment to ethical animal use in research. Professor Raghavan’s vision is to maintain an environment where researchers can access the resources they need to conduct innovative and impactful studies, all while adhering to national and international animal welfare standards.

Professor Raghavan’s leadership ensures that the facility remains at the forefront of research support and animal care. His focus on responsible and ethical practices has fostered a culture of excellence at the facility, where the wellbeing of the animals and the success of the researchers are of paramount Importance. The team at the Central Animal Facility is committed to upholding these values, offering comprehensive support to IISc researchers as they work towards advancing scientific knowledge. With a focus on innovation, collaboration, and sustainability, the Central Animal Facility continues to play a vital role in IISc’s mission of excellence in research, contributing to breakthroughs in science and technology that benefit society.

Transgenic Core Facility

Transgenic Core Facility of CAF will be providing services for cryopreservation, recovery, In-vitro fertilization, and rederivation of unique mice lines as well as for the generation of novel mice models.

Genotyping services

Genotyping services shall be provided for specific transgenic animals by Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) upon request for selecting animals, and also to set aside animals for future breeding.

Health Monitoring Laboratory

The health monitoring (HM) of laboratory rodents builds the foundation for preserving animal health and ensuring the validity of research data.

Environmental monitoring program

Microbiology Monitoring of the animal facility environment can assess the efficiency of disinfection and cleaning procedures, air quality and good animal handling practices.
